Delta Dog Safe teaches positive, proactive ways to behave around dogs, to reduce the incidence of dog bites in children.
Volunteer presenters are specially trained to deliver ‘dog friendly’ school and parent education programs. Lessons have been developed by animal behaviourist and education specialists to be age appropriate for primary school children.
Topics include how to read dogs’ body language, how to react in certain situations and how to safely greet and play with dogs. The program includes interaction and role play with non-threatening soft toy dogs, so that children who are frightened of dogs can participate without feeling afraid.
A large illustrated presentation book is used to talk through various scenarios. Children also engage with a large toy dalmation. Parents are provided with an information booklet so they can discuss learnings further at home.
We aim to assign schools as close to the volunteer’s home as possible.
The Delta Dog Sage program in Tasmania is funded by the Tasmanian Government through the Department of Health and Human Services.
